I founded African Voices in 1992 with a small group of writers, artists and visionaries to share the many untold stories in our community. We are facing challenging times.

African Voices joined hundreds of organizations in getting defunded by the NEA. Can we count on you to have our back by making a donation or becoming a member?

You have the power to save and preserve our arts institutions. African Voices has a partnership with Spelman College to preserve 33 years of the magazine’s history as an art institution. Spelman will digitalize our collection for the next generation to enjoy.

African Voices sponsors Reel Sisters of the Diaspora Film Festival & Lecture Series (www.reelsisters.org), the first Oscar qualifying film festival for women of color. Reel Sisters screens 50+ films directed, written and produced by women from across the globe.

From offering script to screen opportunities for emerging women filmmakers to hosting literary readings, workshops and art exhibitions for writers and visual artists, African Voices is a community space for audiences to honor our history and stories.

Located in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn, our pop up gallery features local visual artists, offers storytelling, creative writing and craft workshops. We provide fellowships and scholarships for emerging writers to create screenplays and memoirs. Our “Get Your Read On!” trains young people in the art of storytelling, architecture, playwriting, quilt making and other artistic traditions.
